The aim of the course was to teach students how to make themselves useful in case of an emergency.

The course consisted in 4 two-hour sessions. The students learnt the basic first aid gestures so as to have the most appropriate response when facing an emergency situation. They studied how to assess the situation, secure the scene to avoid complications of an accident, summon assistance, and assist casualties with appropriate gestures.

They learnt how to react in different situations:

National signal warning / Traumas / Partial or complete obstruction of the airway (choking)

External bleeding / Faintness / Simple or serious burns / Unconsciousness with breathing and lateral safety position / Unconsciousness without breathing  and cardio-pulmonary reanimation with or without the use of a defibrillator / Serious wounds.

All the situations were staged  and different concrete cases of emergency were addressed .

For example, a student performed the witness’s role, discovered the scene, assessed  the situation precisely, protected, summoned assistance and gave the appropriate first aid. This was followed by a debriefing in order to correct the possible mistakes and complete the rescue action.

The students who attended all the sessions of the course and who learnt all the gestures got their First Aid Certification (PSC1: prévention et secours civiques niveau 1)
