AS4 e-body: digestion

All the pupils in 5th  form (aged 12-13) studied human  digestion in English during the science lesson. As far as possible the teacher asked them to study authentic documents coming from GB, so that they could get started with the English  scientific language. The documents came from books used in GB in  KS3, for English pupils the same age and level as our French group. The pupils discovered the different organs  forming the digestive system, the two stages of digestion, the organs producing enzymes, the importance of bacteria in the digestion process,  how nutrients pass into the bloodstream and finally how our body cells produce energy  and oxygen.

Then the pupils studied how to  compose balanced and healthy menus and avoid food-born illness.

They also carried out in vitro experiments of the digestion of egg white by pepsin, making a control experiment and a test experiment, changing only one factor in order to be able to analyze the results. They saw real digestion  because the pieces of egg white completely disappeared , so they could deduce that the smaller the pieces (as if carefully chewed) , the quicker the food was digested, demanding less energy to the body.

The beginning of the lesson was quite hard, because the pupils are not used to studying science in English. They were afraid they would not follow the lesson, but rather quickly, they realized that they were able to understand the documents and the lesson. So things got easier and more relaxed later on.

lThe students now have undoubtedly a better knowledge of human digestion and the connections with the other functions of the body were studied later in other lessons.  They also improved their foreign language skills and self-confidence.
